CompaqCompaq is a leading provider of computers and has recently merged with HP and thus their lines of PDA’s have changed. HP now heads up that part but that doesn’t mean Compaq didn’t have impact on the PDA market in the time they were in it. Compaq PDA Aero was a release of Compaq and was a very nifty little PDA. The Aero were small is size put was actually a very nice PDA. It had a small processor of only 70 MHz which a few years ago was probably pretty fast. By today’s standard it is outdated. Memory was small at only 16mb but in had a one industry standard CF card slot. So really what good was it then. The Compaq Aero had a super software bundle that was probably second to none. From Microsoft Windows to Web Browser their software package was one of the best around. In today’s new PDA’s it’s hard to find so much software in such a small PDA. The joining of Compaq and HP in my mine really has hurt Compaq for many reasons. The Compaq PDA’s basically are not made any more as the HP PDA’s are more rapidly produced and marketed. The demise of the Compaq PDA is too bad as they had a good model and I think it would have done well on it’s own. This is what usually happens when two companies merge. Something takes a hit and it was the Compaq PDA. You can still find some of the older Compaq PDA’s at some good prices, but anything new will usually be under the HP nameplate. Compaq still has input in the PDA market through the HP model so don’t think just because you don’t see a Compaq PDA nameplate that doesn’t mean they are sitting back and doing nothing. Compaq has grown as a small company and has a loyal following through the years. HP realized this and knew when they merged they would already have a base from the Compaq name. You can’t blame HP for that as they could build that base to showcase their products to and maybe lure them to some of their products. That is great business strategy and usually works real well for the company doing. Sometimes it backfires, but not very often. I guess only time will tell how the HP/Compaq merger works out for both sides.
