Dell Axim X51vWhile Dell may end up in the history books as more renown for their now unemployed spokesperson (“Dude, he’s got a Dell!”) They made the charts in a more favorable way recently. While the market has gotten REALLY crowded with PDA’s from companies all over the place, Dell quietly made a few, cancelled a few, and recently was awarded the LAPTOP Editors Choice (11/05) for their Axim X51v model PDA. While Dell surely isn’t anybodies RIM in the PDA world, with a reasonable price, VGA display, and a host of other goodies, the Axim X51v from Dell may just be your next PDA.Powered, first of all, by Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, the Axim X51v gets a big crux out of the way straight away; compatibility. For too long, people held on to other ideas of what they could and could not do but we all need to face facts; if you don’t have Windows access, whether in home, in school, or in business, you’re really swimming alone. The fact that this unit contains Windows Mobile 5.0 is great; the fact that it’s also equipped with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile makes it not only functional but fun. Dell’s Axim X51v is powered by an Intel Xscale PZA270 processor at an impressive 624 MHz. Processing speed like that is reason enough to consider the Axim X51v for your PDA. Add in an Integrated Intel 2700 G multimedia accelerator with 16 MB video memory and 64 MB SDRAM as well as a whopping 256 ROM Flash memory, and you’re dealing with a machine that came to play. Another point of contention is accessibility; you need to be able to reach and be reached wherever you are; enter Bluetooth. The Axim X51v from Dell comes equipped with both Bluetooth wireless and an integrated 802.11b signal for your office on the road as we travel the information superhighway one more time around. There is plenty of room for expansion when we’re talking about SD, SDIO, and MMC card slots for the ultimate in freedom. There is also the battery to speak of. Many PDA’s have a shameful battery life; the Axim X51v is equipped with a removable primary battery which has a decent half life all its own. Feel free when you’re purchasing to inquire about the high capacity battery for even longer shelf life. If you need cases, they are available and should be entertained. Aluminum cases or even just leather sleeves make a big difference when you’re thinking of the continued good use of your machine. Form, function, fun. The Axim X51v from Dell is a perfect example of the melding of the three.
