Garmin iQue 3600It’s always an accomplishment to say that you were the first to do something. In addition, there is a lot of baggage that goes along with a distinction of being the first to do anything; the Garmin iQUE 3600 was lauded as the first PDA to include an integrated GPS technology. The iQUE 3600 is long since discontinued, though there is much to be learned from this product.iQUE 3600 ran on the Palm OS 5 operating system and was embedded with not only GPS and mapping software but also the power of QUE technology. QUE technology delivers ‘location awareness,’ enables users to see where they are, find street addresses, and allows for a full enabled, turn-by-turn navigation system. The iQUE 3200 ran a 200 MHz ARM 9 processor which enhances screen redraw, graphics, and audio. iQUE 3600 also comes with a 32 MB internal memory for downloading of map data as well as other compatible software. There was also an SD expansion slot for flexible storage of additional memory and software. On a unit like the iQUE 3600 there were some standard applications both from the Garmin unit itself as well as from the Palm OS and other third party applications that were included on the iQUE 3600. Some of these applications include: Astraware Game pack, powerOne Personal Calculator, Documents to Go by DataViz, DataViz Mail, Palm Reader, Star Caddy, Vindigo, and WorldMate. iQUE’s unit size may have been one of its greatest assets as well as one of its downfalls. It was small with only 2.8” width x 5” height, so it was small enough to fit in any traveler’s front pocket or in a snug spot on an automobiles dash. The display screen however, only being 2.16” x 3.24” combined with the intricacy of the maps being produced may have made them difficult to read. iQUE 3600 like many of its brethren offers turn by turn directions using their built in features. With its voice recorder, you can make memos while driving or take quick notes either before you leave like “hidden left turn on the steep hill at the coupling of mailboxes” so you’re sure to make it to your destination on time. Garmin iQUE 3600 came equipped with a rechargeable internal Lithium-ion battery which had the ability to recharge either hooked up to the adapter or in the cradle. The Garmin website also says that despite the fact that this model has been discontinued, they continue to support this model and offer supplemental products and services for your added convenience. While there is something to be said for being the first, it is clear from recent developments in not only GPS technology but also PDA technology that people would rather combine their units for greater efficiency.
