Hitachi G1000The G1000 from Hitachi holds the dubious distinction of being the first pocket PC with a built in keyboard. With a comparatively large screen, minimal battery life, bulky build, and. . . the dubious distinction of being the very first pocket PC with a built in keyboard, the Hitachi G1000 hasn’t gotten a very fair shake since its introduction in 2003. Let’s have a look though and see what we can find.First of all, the G1000 does not have a very great battery life. Today, we may scoff and wistfully remember when but even at the time, a battery life of 150 minutes of talking time, in a day, was not a lot. The problem probably lay in the afore mentioned distinction as being the first, there are a lot of things that have got to go to make a phone work. By other standards, not a whole lot has changed. Its LCD screen had 65K color technology, and while 32MB memory isn’t really done all that much anymore, if you’ve had your PDA for any length of time, you may also share that size memory. The G1000 also comes with a flash card for additional memory. The G1000 from Hitachi has long since been discontinued. There is a constant influx of new machinery coming across the lineup every day; technology is always changing as inventors discover newer, faster, cheaper ways to produce what was once exclusive and expensive for everyone in an inexpensive manner. So locating a cheap Hitachi G1000 may have to be at an antiques store. The same things would be said about finding any aluminum cases or battery for the Hitachi G1000 (gosh, I hope your mobile device has more than 2.5 hours talking time before it’s got to be recharged!) In the final analysis, more probably could have been done; at 8.4 oz, the phone is pretty heavy. As a cumbersome unit, the Hitachi G1000 needed to have some sort of gimmicky thing like the belt things that go along with some phones to make it a viable contender in the PDA game. With its front facing screen and large monitor, it could be something of a challenge tucking it away somewhere discreet. But at least they tried; it had to happen eventually. While maybe they could have held off a little longer, it’s great that someone was brave enough to go forward with their unit, even though it maybe did need a little more work.
