Sony Clie PEG-NX70VEven with the upgrades from the likes of the Clie SJ22, this model PDA which came out after the 22, the Clie PEG-NX70V still has issues. This unit just exemplifies what I feel are the reasons Sony never made it in the PDA world. While better equipped with essential business and pleasure functions, the NX70V still falls far short from where its more successful competitors are.The Clie PEG-NX80V has a 200 MHz ARM processor that is considerably better than the SJ22 but is still tucked in right around average in terms of processor speed. Still, with the 16MB of memory you’re really tying the hands of the business traveler; asking them to purchase extra do-dad’s; when all they need to do is go midrange and up on any competitors model PDA’s. There are good qualities to the Sony Clie PEG-NX70V PDA. Nice display screen, 16 bit resolution on a 65K color screen gives you better than average viewfinder. This model PDA does have a MP3 player with notably good sound quality and comes with a 310 pixel camera for both stills and video. But again, the real inhibitor with the Sony PEG-NX70V model PDA is all the darn options! If you want to upgrade the piddly memory, there are memory sticks or CF card slot ability. If you want Wi-Fi that’s available in an optional format, you need to get the Wi-Fi card! With so many disparate elements needing to be pulled together for no apparent reason, it makes me wonder why people wouldn’t just spend a little more upfront to get all these options standard. Again, my frustrations run long and deep as I’ve always been a huge fan of Sony products. To my eye, they’ve always represented quality, top shelf usability, from a team who understands what customers want, and they deliver. Sony needs to get back to the basics of offering what people want and let the products speak for themselves. Pull together all these elements which people use and which people want, wrap it all together, and slap the name Sony on it, and you’ll have a hit! When I’ve got a great all around unit that I can both play MP3’s on, shoot video, stills, on a great display screen and one that works for my business needs, then that’s something worth celebrating. The Sony PEG-NX70V Clie just appears to be another failed attempt at that level of quality.
