Sony Clie SJ22Sony has a long history of being a great media and electronics retailer. One avenue where they never seem to have stuck, at least so far as I can tell, is in the PDA/cellular telephone world. By stuck, that is to say, in the 80’s EVERYONE had a SONY walkman; we’d make mix tapes with cheap store brand tapes for our friends, but when we were making a tape for that special someone, we’d break out the expensive SONY tapes; I still have SONY mix tapes that were given to me by special people though it’s been 10 years since I’ve had a working cassette deck. The point is that SONY seeped into the consciousness as top tier; there was never a doubt about what SONY meant; which is why their relative fizzling in the PDA world puzzles so. The reason for their never making it in the PDA world perhaps could have to do with their presentation. Take the Sony Clie SJ 22; there are a lot of features to this unit which make it a great deal, others still that make it seem a little haphazard. SJ22 has a 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor that at the time was “fast enough for the average users needs,” yet today would get smoked in our digital times. Maybe SONY was making a Walkman style PDA in an IPOD flavored world. Also the 16MB of memory is fine, but as files grow and people need to store greater volumes of information for longer periods, the 16MD framework has been lost to 32/64 even 128 and in some cases 256MB or more. The size on a unit like the SJ22 is stocky compared with other at-the-time current, slimmer models and that is something which is prohibitive to a business traveler. But the real inhibitor with the Sony SJ22 model PDA is the haphazard software that runs on it. For example there are a few nice name brand image viewing members included in this model PDA yet software like Documents to Go (which allows working with Word and Excel docs) is not included. There is a program called Picsel Viewer which allows working with MS Office docs that has been included in other Clie models, but isn’t found on the SJ22. Beyond the workability of the unit, there are Memory Sticks that allow more storage, but they are a separate purchase as is an MP3 player. If you can’t operate with Word or Excel and you can’t store more than 16MB and you can’t even use this as an MP3, then what’s the point? Even with the low cost, I can think of a lot better things on which I could spend my money.
